There is a two-fold iron rule of Mediterranean eating and entertaining; you never come empty-handed, and you never leave with an empty stomach. We think this rule goes beyond food, and should be considered a rule for life. The act of giving of yourself has been proven to be the key to a happier, healthier life, and helps explain why people in the small, close-knit communities that dot the Mediterranean landscape tend to live to such Yoda-like ages.
Giving to others has been at the heart of who we are and what we do since the beginning. It’s built into every product we make, and it is an integral part of our business model. It is in this spirit of giving that we’ve partnered with The Edible Schoolyard Project.
Ever hear of Alice Waters? Well, you know all these farm-to-table restaurants that are so ubiquitous now? Well she was doing it before it was cool. She practically invented the slow food movement and is the founder and owner of Chez Panisse, a restaurant that features only the finest sustainably sourced, organic, peak-of-their-season ingredients. It’s an idea we’re all familiar with now, but in 1971 it was revolutionary.
It seems she’s doing it all over again with The Edible Schoolyard Project. The idea: transform children's relationships with food by giving them a taste of what's possible. She partnered with middle school in Berkeley, California to create a garden that the children could work in, learn from, and most of all, eat from. That partnership now trains and inspires educators from around the world to seed and grow sustainable programs in their communities.
